The Los Angeles Angels placed ace Jered Weaver on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured elbow on his non-throwing arm, the team announced Tuesday.
The Angels said he is expected to miss at least four weeks with the injury, which the team termed a left non-displaced radial head fracture. The disabled-list move is retroactive to April 8.
Weaver, 30, suffered the injury Sunday against the Rangers, jamming his non-throwing arm while dodging a line drive off the bat of Mitch Moreland to start the sixth inning.
“Pretty painful. It feels a little swollen in there,” Weaver said after Sunday’s game. “I can’t move it around too good right now. It’s strange. Kind of like jamming your thumb.”
The pitcher rolled over and immediately grabbed his arm near the elbow. Manager Mike Scioscia and a trainer quickly were on the field. X-rays were negative.
“I tried to catch myself and saw the ball coming at me. I didn’t land right on it. Definitely, hyperextended it or something,” Weaver said Sunday. “I kind of landed on my glove and I pushed to get out of the way. I landed in an awkward position.”
The right-hander, who won 20 games for the first time in his career in 2012, took the loss Sunday after allowing five runs and seven hits in five innings. He struck out two and walked four.
The Angels recalled right-hander Dane De La Rosa from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Weaver’s roster spot.
