Mike Redmond Hired as New Miami Marlins Manager

Just days after firing manager Ozzie Guillen, the Miami Marlins have found their new man. Mike Redmond has been signed by the Marlins to a 3-year deal as manager of the struggling ballclub. Prior to this, Redmond was a Class-A manager in the Toronto Blue Jays association and a relative unknown in the coaching world – a far cry from the polarizing manager Guillen was.

Redmond has strong ties to the Marlins’ organization, where he played for seven years as  a catcher and was a part of the World Series winning team in 2003. He is second on the list of most games played by a Marlins catcher. Redmond does not bring any major league coaching or managing experience to the table, but his insights into the game as a major league catcher are highly valued at any level.

Also interviewed were former major league manager Larry Bowa, former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon and Cincinnati Reds pitching coach Bryan Price. New manager, Mike Redmond was a clubhouse favorite during his playing days in Miami, famously taking batting practice in the nude for several days to help break the Marlins out of a slump. “People ask you, ‘What’s your style?’ ” Redmond said last week. “I learned a lot from all of my managers. … There are so many guys I learned different things from. I sat and listened and watched and learned.”
