2010 College World Series Opening Round Update

Momentum seems to be the name of the game so far after the opening round of games are in the books. Statistically, ASU, TCU, UCLA and Oklahoma should all be on the winner’s side of the bracket, but the Devils play the odd man out this year, running into a red-hot Clemson team.

The most exciting game thus far (Oklahoma vs. South Carolina) dragged on forever thanks to a couple of rain delays but the Sooners came out on top. UCLA and TCU won handily on Saturday and will face each other later on today.

Meanwhile, it’s a Sunshine State battle to stay alive as Florida and Florida State play an elimination game, with the loser being the first team to pack their bags for home this 2010 CWS.

The loss by ASU sends them to the loser’s side of the bracket where they face a fairly underrated South Carolina team in a battle to play another day in Omaha.

So whether you put more stock in my statistical predictions, or my intangible predictions – you would be mostly right.

I’m looking forward to a great matchup between Clemson and Oklahoma on Tuesday – two offensive juggernauts. And if you’re looking for pitching, look no further than the game between TCU and UCLA later this evening, both teams have stellar pitching staffs.

I will try to update scores and matchups after games go final tonight between UCLA and TCU as well as the elimination game between Florida and FSU.
